• The value inside the parenthesis of switch statement expression is tested for equality against the value of each case.
• The case having a value matching to the value of switch, is executed.











Switch Statement Example


The case with the value matching to the value within parenthesis of Switch, is executed.

int main()  /* main method starts*/
{
int i=20;

switch(i)
{
case 10:
	printf("value is 10");
	break;
case 20:
	printf("value is 20");
	break;
case 3:
	printf("value is 30");
    break;
default:
	printf("This is default");
}

} /* main method ends and so does the program */





Output




value is 20


As the break statement is found after the matching case value 20 hence, the control has not executed any statement connected to any cases underneath.







Switch statement with no matching case


If no matching case value is found then statement connected to the default case is executed, only if default case is mentioned with the default keyword.

/* C - switch example with matching case */

#include<stdio.h>

int main()  /* main method starts */
{
char i='A';

switch(i)
{
case 'B':
	printf("char value is B");
	break;
case 'E':
	printf("char value is A");
	break;
case 'D':
	printf("char value is A");
	break;
default:
	printf("This is default");
}

return 0;
} /* main method ends and so does the program */





Output




This is default


Note : A break statement after each case is not mandatory.

Switch statement cases with no break statement


If the matching case is found but there is no break statement connected to it then control will execute all the statements connected to the all cases underneath it.

/* C - switch statement example with no break statement */

#include<stdio.h>

int main()  /* main method starts */
{
int i=2;

switch(i)
{
case 1:
	printf("value is 1 \n");
	
case 2:
	printf("value is 2 \n");
	
case 3:
	printf("value is 3 \n");
	
default:
	printf("This is default");
}

return 0;
} /* main method ends and so does the program */





Output




value is 2
value is 3
This is default
